Event – Policy Outlook: Strengthening disease prevention through clean air measures

Location:
Room Spaak 7C50, European Parliament, Brussels

Date & time:
January 28, 2025
12:00 – 14:00 CET

Air pollution remains the top environmental risk to health in Europe, resulting in hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and hundreds of billions of euros in costs annually. The recently revised EU Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD), with updated clean air standards, offers unique opportunities to prevent health impacts across the EU and reduce the significant health and economic burden caused by poor air quality.

The EU Healthy Air Coalition (EUHAC) successfully organized a high-level event in the European Parliament on 28 January 2025. Co-hosted by MEP Javi Lopez, the event brought together Brussels-based organizations representing diverse constituencies of the health sector, including doctors and other healthcare professionals, scientists, public health experts, respiratory and cancer patient groups, and health insurance funds.

During the event, representatives from the EUHAC, civil society, scientists, and policymakers engaged in meaningful discussions. Participants heard first-hand experiences from individuals most at risk, learned about the latest advancements in air pollution science, and explored ways to advance clean air policies. The event served as a platform to strengthen collaboration and drive forward actionable solutions to address air pollution and its health impacts across Europe.
